It can really be a daunting task trying to find a breeder that is responsible, caring, and wants only the best homes for their Dachshund puppies. Those are the breeders who put the time and energy into producing fantastic companions that are healthy, happy, and well-adjusted.

When I am searching for a new Dachshund to add to my home, there are specific things that I look for during the initial interview with any breeder. You should always create a list of questions and be willing to make phone contact with a breeder so you have a better way to gauge their reactions to your questions. A breeder who skirts around questions or does not seem knowledgeable about the breed is one you want to mark off your list.

Before you start your search for the right Dachshund puppy, research the breed. Even if you have had a Dachshund, or currently have a Doxie, you want to continue to research the breed, health issues, and genetic testing that should be done. This makes you informed so you know what to look for and what to expect from a responsible breeder.

Having been a Dachshund breeder for over 26 years, even I have been scammed. But I have learned over the years to spot the red flags that point to irresponsible breeders or scammers. While the breeders that are listed here have been checked out, you will still want to thoroughly research any that you are considering getting a Doxie from, ask questions, and pay attention to their answers.

Find out how we chose a reputable Dachshund breeder before you begin your search for your new companion. Each listing found here will tell you:

  • Breeder’s location
  • What is included with a puppy
  • What is good about the breeder
  • Breeder’s phone number, website, and social media link

Final thoughts

Utah does not have an over-abundance of Dachshund breeders and so it may be difficult to find a puppy right away unless you are willing to travel out of state to find a new puppy. After researching breeders, I did find that Utah has a lot of pet shops that offer puppies and I encourage you to avoid those when searching for a new puppy.

You want to get your next Dachshund companion from a responsible breeder who wants to know about you and your home to determine that their puppy will have the best life possible. When you purchase from a pet shop or store, you are getting a puppy mill puppy that comes from questionable parentage and lesser registries. Health on these puppies may very well be compromised and there is no breeder to stand behind that pet shop puppy that you thought was so adorable and had to bring home.

Do your research, make a list of questions, and talk with breeders, starting with the ones listed here. You want your new Dachshund puppy to be happy, healthy, and able to adjust to new situations. Some of these breeders do not list their phone numbers, but you can contact them through their website contact form or emails that are listed.

Remember, always do your own research and find a reputable breeder you will be comfortable with and who is comfortable with you. You are forming a relationship with the breeder as you will both be committed to the health and well-being of the puppy for its lifetime.

About Dr. Holly Ramsey, Ph.D.

It is a joy to be able to share my passion with others who love and cherish the Dachshund. I have been a preservation breeder of Dachshunds at Classic Kennels since 1996, specializing in miniature short-hair Dachshunds. Throughout the years, I have successfully shown over 12 Dachshunds to multiple Best of Breed wins, Hound Group placements and wins, Reserve Best in Show and Best in Show wins as well as multiple titles. Aside from showing in conformation, I am a preservation breeder dedicated to preserving the breed and furthering health testing to produce genetically clear, beautiful Dachshunds. The crowning success of both my show career and breeding goals was when our Dachshund breeding program was recognized as the Reserve Best in Show Family Group, beating out some fantastic other breeders of various breeds.
