Blue Dachshund: Breed Info, Temperament, Health, and Costs

Dachshund dogs are very impressed with their short legs and long backs, their floppy ears, and their wiener dog looks. The interesting thing about this breed is that it comes in many different colors and coat types. There are more than 25 different coat colors, including the blue color. Check its color variations in details.

The blue Dachshund is one of the best-looking of all the Dachshund breeds. The color blue in this breed is one that is a diluted color of black and both of the parent dogs have to have the blue color in their genes in order to make the blue Dachshund.

Even though this dog is considered blue in color, it really is a diluted black which makes it gray and that causes it to look blue.

This color Dachshund can come in all coat varieties including the wire, long and short-haired varieties.

Blue Dachshund

There are two kinds of blue Dachshunds, a miniature, and a standard size. This breed comes in many different colorings, markings, patterns, and coat types.

The blue Dachshund is a breed of the Dachshund that was bred to be the color blue. This happens when the genes for the blue color are in both parents. The blue color is actually a diluted color of black which gives stunning coat of the dog a bluish tint.

This breed of dog is exciting to have and will be the talk of the town as you strut it down the road but getting a dog of this rare color can come with a price because these dogs are not always as healthy as the other colored Dachshunds are.

What Makes Their Coat Blue?

The blue Dachshund comes in many different colors and the colors are based on the genetics of the parent breed. When you get a blue dachshund’s coat the color of this breed, it means that both of the parents have the blue color in their genes.

The blue is actually a diluted black and it, therefore, makes the black look a shade of blueish tint. When a coat is diluted, t means that it makes the shade duller and lighter and that makes it easy to see a difference from the original color.

The diluted gene is a recessive gene, and this means that the dogs can carry that gene without being a diluted color. The blue Dachshund only has to have two copies of the diluted gene to be that color. If only one of the parents carries the gene, the dog will not be a blue color.

These are the diluted blue coat colors that the Dachshund can have:

  • Blue and tan
  • Solid blue
  • Isabella and tan
  • Blue and cream
  • Isabella and cream
  • Solid Isabella

Blue Dapple Dachshund

The Blue Dapple Dachshund is one that will have a coat that is full of patterns. This happens because of genetics and because of the merle gene in the dog.

When dogs began to be bred, the merle gene was not known in the Dachshund breed, and it wasn’t until later that the coat pattern became popular, and the gene was introduced.

This is now more of a common coat for the Dachshund and results in there being light and dark patches that look like it has color splashes around its coat.

The merle gene will not only change the coat, but it will also cause the Dachshund to have blue eyes or a blue and a brown eye. Dogs that have two different colored eyes are called bi-eyes and are very pretty to look at.

Double Dapple Blue Dachshund

There is also a Double Dapple Blue Dachshund which is a Dachshund that has parents that are both blue and are both dapples.

The dog that has a double dapple will have white markings on their coat and will have the merle gene which will form the patches. This means that a Double Dapple will have white coloring around the paws and sometimes the neck and chest.

The problem is that the double dapple can cause major health concerns and it is not advised to breed two dapple dogs together because they can pick up many genetic disorders and you can end up with a sick dog.

Blue Dachshund Temperament

The blue Dachshund has an amazing personality. It is full of energy and loves its owner. The blue Dachshund will love its owner and will be very loyal to them. These pups have boundless energy and will keep you on your toes and keep you laughing.

The blue Dachshund loves to dig and loves to play outside. This breed loves to be active and has a hunting instinct and will be most excited when it is taken on a fun adventure in the yard or out and about.

This dog is very smart and is easy to train but you might bump into its bullheaded and stubborn side, but you can sidetrack them with treats and praise.

Since this dog is so confident, it won’t be afraid to check out new things such as other people and pets and they won’t care how big or small the animal is as long as they can say hello.

Most of the Blue Dachshunds that you will meet will have the common traits and personalities of the other Dachshund colors. They are very loving and affectionate, and they want to have the attention of their owner.

They love to play and cuddle and they like to follow their owners to make sure they get plenty of love and attention.

Sometimes the Blue Dachshund will be clingy because of its loyalty to the owner, and this can cause it to not want to be left alone. If left alone too long, this dog can get separation anxiety and have some behavioral problems such as crying a lot, barking, chewing things, and getting into messes.

A Blue Dachshund is a genetically formed color of the Dachshund that is very rare. This blue coloring comes from a genetic mutation where the black coat is diluted, and it makes it look blue instead of the traditional black one.

A Blue Dachshund will most likely have brown, amber, or one blue and one brown eye but the only dogs that can have both blue eyes are the Double Dapple Dachshunds.

Blue Dachshund Health Problems

Blue Dachshund Health Problems

Blue Dachshunds can come with some serious health risks because of their color. Even though Dachshunds are prone to certain health issues such as IVDD and other spine issues, getting one that is a rare color can mean that you are getting one that is less healthy.

Blue Dachshund Skin Problems

This breed of Dachshund is often prone to skin problems and skin diseases. This happens because the rare blue color often loses their hair and this can cause there to be skin infections, can lead to skin cancer, and can cause your dog to get sunburned in the sun.

This particular color is often at risk for Color Dilution Alopecia, and it is thought that more than 40% of diluted dogs will suffer from this condition. This is not a life-threatening condition, but it can increase the risk of skin cancer.

Blue Dachshund Hereditary Illnesses

Another health issue with the blue Dachshund is that they can have other hereditary illnesses. Some of these illnesses include:

  • Eye problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, and even blindness (check more).
  • Seizures
  • Teeth issues-crooked teeth or tooth decay.

Blue Dachshund Grooming Requirements

The blue Dachshund is not a hypoallergenic dog and will shed. This dog will shed even more during the season changes. It is important to brush your dog at least 5 times a week to keep the shedding down and to keep the fur shiny and healthy.

It is important to groom your dog by giving it a bath every 4 to 6 weeks, trimming its nails, cleaning its ears, and looking at its skin to make sure that it doesn’t have any lesions or any cuts. Always check this breed for any tumors or odd things on the body.

If your blue Dachshund gets CDA, you need to make sure that you use ointments and that you find all-natural dog shampoos to keep the skin from drying out or being patchy. This sickness can cause the hair to fall out and so it is important to make sure you are paying special attention to your dog.

  1. Thank you for your article. The date it appeared must be a while ago. The price of a blue dachshund (AKC) must be closer to 15000 in 2021. Or I went to the first available AKC breeder in NY. I paid 14000 for a dappled longhaired miniature (?) dachshund. She said she told me the parents were both 12lbs. That I truly do not recall. I am not happy with her as she denies me the dog’s AKC papers and demands the dog be neutered. And rushed me into signing papers without the chance to read them. She is litigious and is contacting her lawyer because I insist on the papers to know his lineage. I am also concerned that he has one blue eye and one brown eye. Some of what I had read in the past and again here has me concerned about his overall health now and in the future. If you get the time I would appreciate any comment you might address these issues
